CHSA's Statement on the House Office of Diversity and  Inclusion’s 2021 Compensation and Diversity Study Results

Washington, D.C. — Today, the Congressional Hispanic Staff Association  (CHSA) released the following statement on the House Office of Diversity and  Inclusion’s 2021 survey of House Compensation & Benefits and Demographics &  Diversity. The 2021 survey found that 14.4% of staff in Member, committee, and  leadership offices are Hispanic, Latino, or of Spanish origin, a growth of only 1%  since this survey was first conducted in 2019.
“CHSA applauds the release of the House Office of Diversity and Inclusion’s  second-ever staff compensation and diversity study. Given CHSA’s longtime  advocacy for the creation of this office and the ongoing collection of data on staff  pay and demographics, we are pleased to see this second survey contribute to an  institutional compilation of data on critical workplace topics. While the survey  shows that some of the realities of Hill work remain unchanged from two years ago,  it is heartening that nearly 80% of respondents voiced a belief that their office  leadership values diversity. This is a sea change that should galvanize offices to  prioritize diversity in hiring more than ever. We encourage offices to reach out to  the House Office of Diversity and Inclusion and to CHSA for the resumes of high quality Hispanic candidates who are ready to serve.”
“Furthermore, the study’s innovative dashboard will provide those who aspire to  work on Capitol Hill with a better understanding of compensation in House  congressional offices, and will also help current staff determine if they are being  paid fairly. The majority of respondents in Member offices disagreed that they are  compensated properly for their work. Adequate pay is critical to recruiting and  retaining diverse public servants who care deeply about the work we do in service of the American people. CHSA will continue to call for increased pay for  congressional staff, particularly for junior staff and staff of color.”
