Washington, D.C. — Today, the Congressional Hispanic Staff Association released the following statement with the Congressional Asian Pacific American Staff Association, Congressional Black Associates, and Senate Black Legislative Staff Association after the U.S. Supreme Court's 5-4 decision preserving the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program:
“For three long years, DACA recipients have lived in fear of being separated from their families and deported from the only home they've ever known. Today, hundreds of thousands of immigrants and their loved ones across the country—including members of our very own CHSA family on Capitol Hill—can finally breathe a sigh of relief. We celebrate with them, their families, and communities.
At the root of CHSA’s mission to recruit, retain, and advance Latinx and Hispanic congressional staffers is the core belief that our presence enhances Congress’s ability to represent the diversity of our nation. Within our membership are driven and courageous Dreamers who work tirelessly to make our country more just and equitable for all. Their contributions and desire to serve underscore that diversity makes us stronger.
While this decision has been long-awaited by our community, we know it is not a permanent solution. It is now up to Congress to finally put an end to this uncertainty. As congressional leadership considers next steps, there can be no doubt that CHSA members on both sides of the aisle will be part of advocating for and facilitating this shared goal. Until then, we look forward to the arrival of more Dreamers, Latinx, and Hispanic individuals on the Hill and will continue to welcome them into our family.”
“The Supreme Court’s landmark decision to preserve DACA is a huge victory for Dreamers and their families,” said the Congressional Asian Pacific American Staff Association. “No person in the United States should have to live in fear of deportation. This is their home. Dreamers have built a life here, contributed to society, and many have been working on the frontlines of this pandemic to keep our communities safe. Today’s historic decision has lifted a huge weight off the shoulders of countless immigrants and their families, including for tens of thousands of AAPI Dreamers. However, we cannot be complacent with today’s ruling. We strongly urge Congress to work together to pass a legislative and permanent solution to help Dreamers across the country.”
“We are cheering the landmark Supreme Court decision today that rejects the termination of the DACA program and offers a simple message to our DACA friends and colleagues: your home is here,” the Congressional Black Associates said. “It is clear that this victory sets us on a stronger path forward; embracing the invaluable contributions of our nation’s immigrants, while remaining consistent with the very essence of America as a nation built from the contributions of newcomers everywhere. We are united with our CHSA colleagues and we make clear that their ideals are reflected in our own. Today is a proud day, and we strive for more like these to come.”
“Today’s decision by the Supreme Court is a celebratory moment for Dreamers and their families,” stated the Senate Black Legislative Staff Caucus. “We support our colleagues in the Latino and Hispanic communities and look forward to Congress taking up this important issue that impacts so many of our friends.”
