Washington, D.C. — Today, the Congressional Hispanic Staff Association released the following statement marking the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month:
“Since 1968, September 15th has marked the beginning of National Hispanic Heritage Month—a time to celebrate Hispanic and Latinx culture, leadership, and achievement in the United States. While National Hispanic Heritage Month has a short formal history, Hispanic and Latinx communities have been shaping our country for hundreds of years and continue to push our nation forward today. As we kick off this month-long celebration in an unconventional time, the spirit of Hispanic Heritage Month reignites CHSA's mission to increase inclusion and Hispanic representation among congressional staff.
“Our organization is over 300 members strong and consists of individuals from all walks of life. In CHSA, we find solidarity on Capitol Hill and a shared desire to make our country better through our work. Regardless of our varied backgrounds, we are united in the belief that we can contribute to our nation’s progress by ensuring Hispanic and Latinx individuals have a seat at the table throughout the halls of Congress. Policymaking must be informed by and reflective of the people it serves.
“In honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month, CHSA has organized a series of events to celebrate our shared and diverse heritages, foster professional development opportunities, and bring our membership together. Events will be held virtually starting on September 15th and end on October 15th. Be sure to follow us on our Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter social media pages as we shine a spotlight on the stories and achievements of our CHSA members, Hispanic and Latinx Members of Congress, and other trailblazers. You can submit nominations for CHSA’s Hispanic Heritage Month 2020 Spotlights here.
“We look forward to convening our members virtually and celebrating CHSA’s best Hispanic Heritage Month yet."
